Content and structure of this information
- Structure of this information
- Every technical term used in these pages is intended to be a
hypertext link to another page
that gives a full definition of the term, with examples and pictures.
If you find a technical term that you do not understand and that is not
defined, please
mail me.
- I have tried to use bullet points wherever the structure allows
because I believe they make a page more readable, although it
takes up more space than straight text.
- I have used tables where they are useful (these may not be viewable
by all browsers).
- I have used pictures where useful to illustrate technical terms and
give examples. This are all gif files, and all relatively small
because they are all 2 colours only (except the header).
All are original for the purpose of these pages and my copyright.
- I have used short wav files to enable you to hear some of
the examples.
All are original for the purpose of these pages and my copyright.
- I have tried to create short pages, with concise points and
references to other pages, rather than long pages with lots of text.
- There are inevitably some circular linkages (for example, where
page A links to page B, and page B links back to page A).
This does not mean that there is a circular reference of the
definition of a term (I hope).
- The information contained in these pages can be found in books, or
could be contained on the Internet in a flat file. There are both
advantages and disadvantages in my structure over the more traditional
formats:
- advantages:
- you only need to read a bit at a time
- the explanations of technical terms are easily accessed
- you can go direct to the things you want to read about
- you can miss out things you don't want to know about
- disadvantages:
- you may miss things that you thought you knew,
but in fact didn't
- you may miss things that you don't want to know
but then later find that you do need to know them
- in order to read everything, you will need to follow every link
- you might get "lost" in the structure (don't panic!)
I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages!
